Stutz

01 January 2023/in Blog/by Megan Bartley

Everyone’s been raving about the show “Stutz” featuring Jonah Hill and his therapist. Our clients have all been telling us, it’s a must-watch!

Jonah Hill is passionate about making the tools his therapist uses with clients more widely available, and it’s an incredible journey. He has created a “toolbox” that is filled with valuable resources and stories that will help people in their own lives. It’s absolutely captivating to watch this relationship unfold, as he hopes to create a lasting impact on how we approach mental health struggles in our society today.

The Mindfulness Center’s motto, if you will, is “Tools for Your Toolbox to Cope with Life Stressors.” This statement encapsulates the idea that each of our therapists has their own tools and strategies to help clients understand concepts more easily and motivate them towards change. It serves as a reminder that there are simple ways to make progress in life quickly!

Additionally, there are plenty of different themes and storylines throughout the show.

Client-Therapist Bond

The client-therapist bond plays a major role in successful therapy. The connection between Jonah Hill and his therapists is particularly fascinating because it has both advantages and disadvantages, as well as areas where we may need to supplement elsewhere.

Jonah Hill expressed an invaluable thought that really resonated with me, he said…

“I listened to my friends and they give me advice, but I pay a therapist to listen and they should be reversed”

We ask our clients “What would you like me to be as a therapist?” – someone with whom you can simply express yourself and feel secure? Or something else? It appears that this expectation is not the same for everyone.

Providing Tools

Many clients tell say that they want to move forward and need the necessary tools to do so. This sentiment really lends itself to Stutz’s approach: he understands when someone like Jonah Hill needs something more than just advice in order to progress – they need tangible results.

Clients are paying us to create something tangible, and then move forward. This reminds me of Stutz’s comment on mentorship when he asked ‘how can we help them get better?’

The psychiatrist said that treatment was focused on long-term therapy, which is the opposite of what we focus on in our mindfulness center. My goal as a provider here is to give clients tools they can use going forward – resources they can draw upon for any situation or challenge.

Therapy Goals

Our goal is to ensure that clients don’t have to be in therapy long-term and can schedule check-ins as needed, whether it’s monthly, yearly, biyearly or even weekly. There isn’t a “right” way.

We are evaluating what kind of progress our clients hope for and how they perceive their success. This is essential to define, as without concrete goals, it can be difficult to determine if we have achieved our desired outcome; in this case, reducing levels of anxiety.

Ultimately, the focus is on understanding how we can reach this broad goal. What methods will help us measure our progress? We may need to experiment with different tools and tactics before finding a successful solution.

Visualization, Tools, and Sketches

Stutz manufactures these pieces of art and provides them to clients.

His explanation of this type of connection with a client truly resonated with us. It is as if we have provided something tangible to them, and they can physically hold onto it. Hearing him explain it further solidified my appreciation for his creative tools and strategies.

Therapist Don’t Have a Magic Wand

This theme was especially prominent in the movie. It is a common misconception that therapists have all the answers and an ideal life outside of therapy hours; however, we must remember that they are humans too with their own issues to sort out. Thus, I hope most therapists remind themselves of this truth to not become overburdened by unrealistic expectations.

Vulnerability Equals Connection

Achieving a true connection with another person is impossible without vulnerability, however, it’s difficult to be vulnerable when you don’t feel completely secure. This may especially ring true with family members – parents, siblings, and grandparents in particular. During the holiday season, we can strive for full authenticity by being open and honest without fear of judgment or rejection. When this happens, a deep level of connection between individuals can be found that was not previously there before!

It’s all about understanding your audience. Will it be welcomed, or will I need to conceal an aspect of myself? Is this a secure place for me to express my true self, or shall I stay quiet in fear of being judged negatively? Let’s look at it another way — when discussing certain topics, is it more beneficial for both parties involved if we remain private and withhold information that could potentially hurt us instead of helping the situation?

A Safe Harbor

Stutz and Jonah’s relationship created a safe environment for the two to build trust, establish connections, and appreciate each other. In this film, another eye-catching theme is that of discomfort; learning how to make friends with it. What are some other themes in this movie that you particularly admire?

The 3 Givens in Life

They particularly focused on three inescapable truths of life: pain, uncertainty, and change. It was a fascinating thought; how can we accept these as unavoidable parts of our lives? Pain, uncertainty, and perpetual growth will be a part of us forever.

In order to effectively manage uncertainty, we must arm ourselves with coping skills – like tools in a toolbox. How do I approach emotional pain or physical distress when the future is foggy? What if my job suddenly ends or my relationship breaks apart? That sort of unpredictability weighs heavily on us. Having the right resources at our disposal enables us to confront any situation with courage and resilience.

The ongoing effort required for success in our lives, be it a job or relationship, can often feel overwhelming. This is why I am drawn back to the book “The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck,” which really shows us how we could approach these challenges with an attitude that is less about giving up and more about taking control.

To sum up, it’s not about caring for nothing. It is all about deciding what you actually care deeply for and giving attention to that. If we direct our focus on the unfortunate conditions of life, how can I express this? “What you feed grows,” undoubtedly there will always be suffering, pain, and hard work ahead; but instead of being disheartened by these facts – could we accept them as part of our journey? Can we consciously pick out which challenges to face?

Is Stutz worth the watch?

The movie Stutz encapsulates many important themes that we can all relate to. We are reminded of our own pain and uncertainty while also being encouraged to embrace it as part of life’s journey. The idea of vulnerability equaling connection is a powerful one; let us strive for full authenticity this holiday season by being open and honest without fear or judgment from others. Finally, understanding our audience is essential in order to decide what information to share and when it’s best kept private. We take inspiration from Jonah Hill’s character in the film – who showed courage and resilience despite facing challenging situations – so that we too may develop coping skills to confront anything with strength and grace. Give it a watch and let us know what you think.

Napa Valley Retreats, Take 2!!

08 August 2022/in Blog/by Megan Bartley

That’s right! I’m headed back to Napa Valley in January 2023 for my annual retreat and would love to bring a few people along with me!

Who nurtures you, the busy person that you are?

This is a question I ask many of the people I work with. Oftentimes I get blank stares. No one ever asks us that question. And we tend not to ask ourselves that question because we’re avoiding the answer…

This is the chill reset trip you’ve always wanted but perhaps just didn’t have the right people to go with.

Just because this is in Napa Valley, doesn’t mean you have to drink wine or any alcohol! While we will be visiting some wineries, it’s the overall feel of the area and the winery experience that is healing and calming. It expands our thinking when we learn new things and wonderful metaphors abound between how grapes are grown in Napa Valley and who we are as hard-working people! Intrigued? I thought you might be…

There will be some group learning time, reflection time, and lots of self-care, self-compassion, laughter, and lightness. We want this to FUN and LIGHT!

Also, we want to encourage you to do what’s best for you during this time. If you need to sit something out and do something else to best take care of yourself, we want you to do that!

This is your chance to review the past year and be intentional about the upcoming year.

Let’s look at all that is included in the registration:

  • A Curated Napa Valley “Wine Country” Experience by a native Californian – Megan! (Priceless!)
  • Bohemian-Luxury Resort Accommodations at Indian Springs Calistoga, CA  which feels like the adult “summer camp” you’ve always wanted!
  • (Often) Beautiful Weather – Sunny, Blue Skies, and 60/70 degrees
  • Most Meals – Paleo-ish unless otherwise requested
  • Retreat Workbook/Notebook
  • Group Classes with Megan B. Bartley and her 20+ years of wisdom and experience
  • Casual Bike Ride to Nearby Calistoga Wineries  – Tastings Included!
  • A relaxing day in St. Helena – cute shops, great food, wine, and local OLIVE OIL!!
  • Relaxing “Pool/Spa” Day at the 100 degree spring-fed Olympic-size swimming pool – PURE BLISS!

This year we have TWO options:

  • A Women’s Retreat – Monday, Jan 9-Friday, Jan 13
  • A Co-Ed Weekend Retreat – Thursday, Jan 12-Monday, Jan 16

Early Bird Registration is OPEN NOW – (CLICK HERE!) through August 26 to help you save several hundred dollars! After August 26, prices go up.

If you want to come but have specific questions, feel free to email me at [email protected] or log on to a Virtual Meet & Greet via Zoom on Wednesday, August 17 from 3:30-4:15pm. Drop in for a few minutes or come for the whole time.

If you can’t make this retreat, we will likely have retreat notebooks for purchase so you can do a retreat on your own!

Peace.

Ready for a RESET?!

07 July 2022/in Blog, Mindfulness, Self Love/by Megan Bartley

Ready for a reset?!

Yeah, me too!! It’s definitely that time of year!

With that said, I LOVE summertime! Every year I think that I’ll take the summer “off” and not work so much. That lasts about one week and then things start moving and shaking. All the balls I juggle don’t just disappear, they’re still there and need my attention. So I’m currently back to juggling all my balls while balancing the kiddos out of school and trying to get in a bit of time away…one weekend to Nashville, another to Lake Cumberland.

I will say, now that my kids are older (9 and 12) I’m not (YET!) as desperate to get them back in school ASAP as I was when they were younger. They are pretty self-sufficient and my husband, who works remotely from home, loves having the company…so do the pups – Lemon Drop and Deuce Pugalo!

Now, let’s dream of the reset we need… time, space, quiet, relaxation, nature, beauty, creativity…what would you add?

In January I will be heading back to Napa Valley for my annual retreat time and would love to take a few people along who are looking to reset and refresh as well. Could that be you?

This year I will host a women’s retreat (January 9-13) as well as a co-ed, weekend (January 12-16) retreat.

Early Bird Registration will be open for two weeks beginning mid-August. General Registration opens September 1st.

Check out the details below. Early bird registration will be availabe mid-August through end of August. Full registration opens September 1, 2022.

The Mindfulness Center, Mindfulness,

Louisville, Thank You!!!

05 May 2022/in Blog/by Megan Bartley

Hello there!! I’m Megan Bayles Bartley and I want to expand on something I posted on social media recently. I have realized over the years that my work and purpose in life are to help people feel better, feel free to live life to the fullest expression of themselves, and be at peace.

I have been able to do this as a therapist over the past two decades, and now with other therapists for the past five years with Louisville Mindfulness Center. However, we kept hitting a roadblock. First of all, not everyone needs or wants therapy. Fair enough.  Also, as licensed therapists, we can only practice in the states in which we are licensed. That limits us in many ways. Secondly, we have fans and supporters all over the world who love Louisville Mindfulness Center and want us to offer what we are offering more globally. We love the idea of being more accessible to more people. What we offer is bigger than “therapy.” So we’re taking what we’re doing online with “The Mindfulness Center”.

Louisville, I have so much gratitude for you. You have been wonderfully supportive of me and the Louisville Mindfulness Center. You all have been so kind and generous. I appreciate you. You are an inspiration. Thank you!!

With that said, when I named the group practice I started in 2017, “Louisville Mindfulness Center,” I knew what I wanted to create would transcend Louisville, but I also knew that Louisville needed its own thing too. So Louisville Mindfulness Center will remain as it is AND benefit from the wonderful offerings of The Mindfulness Center along with the rest of the world!

During this time of launching “The Mindfulness Center”, we hope you will continue to support us by sharing what we are doing with your friends and family across the U.S. and globally. They can seek support and encouragement through “The Mindfulness Center” through short, straightforward, mind-blowing courses and one-on-one coaching to help them develop more of a Mindfulness Mindset™.

Our thinking, feeling, and behavior are interconnected. When we can shift one, we shift them all. Let’s face it, none of us need more to DO, but what if we could THINK about things from a bit of a different angle… that can shift the whole way you see the world. The Mindfulness Center helps you shift your perspective by just 5% which helps open up more options in your thinking and helps you feel less stuck. Want to learn more? Check out our website: www.Mindfulness-Center.com and stay tuned for more…

Choosing Progress Over Perfection

01 January 2022/in Blog, Self Love/by The Mindfulness Center

Written by Megan Bayles Bartley, MAMFT, LMFT

As a high achiever, entrepreneur, leader, and CEO, I know how hard I tend to push myself and how critical I can be of myself. Through my own therapy, self-care, mindfulness, and meditation, I’ve been successful at increasing positive self-talk and decreasing doubt, guilt, and criticism.

My Mantra?

Strive for Progress NOT Perfection!

Think about it…we will never reach perfection (especially in our own minds since we’re so hard on ourselves).

It’s just not possible. So why are we wasting our time and energy trying?

We are always in Progress…we are progressing through life.

Even if we hit 60 or 75 or 80% of what we *think* is “perfect” it is likely not “good enough.”

Want to feel *good enough*?

Let go of the idea of being perfect.

Let’s be honest (with ourselves AND others) instead. Besides, who’s judging us anyway? We are likely much harder on ourselves than anyone else is or would be!! This vicious cycle is exhausting!

Want more energy? Want to feel good enough? Give yourself permission to know there is no such thing as perfect. Give yourself permission to be kind and graceful with yourself. And then feel the weight lifted from your shoulders so you feel lighter and more energetic!

Remember, we are works in progress…

If you are noticing yourself reassessing your work, your relationships, or even your location, good for you! It means you are being mindful of what all your options are. While you may not truly entertain most of those options, the more choices you give yourself, the less stuck you’ll feel.

And if you are stuck, no problem!

Pushing and forcing works for us at many stages of our life, but there comes a point when we begin to reassess if we need to keep doing things the same way we’ve done them.

Perhaps it’s time to shake shit up a bit?

That’s what we’re here for!! Working with a therapist can offer you more clarity and focus for your path forward. And you’ll feel calmer, lighter, and more peaceful.

Shifting from Should to Could

05 May 2021/in Blog/by The Mindfulness Center
Written by Megan Bayles Bartley, MAMFT, LMFT

Should.

You SHOULD do this. You SHOULD do that. What happens in your body and mind when you read those sentences? 🤔
I wonder if resistance or discomfort arises. For me, I get a knot in my stomach and a lump in my throat. I get heated, fired up.  And I want to fight and argue.
We don’t like to be told what to do. We want the freedom of choice. To choose what feels best to us. Yet we are often the ones shoulding all over ourselves as we remind ourselves of outdated messages we received from other people, faith traditions, cultures, society, etc.
So then does this mean we are creating our own tension inside of ourselves that we don’t need or likely want to be creating?! Hmmm…how would you answer that? When we know better, we do better. There is another option. A way to speak to yourself kinder and gentler.
This is your moment. Notice how you are shoulding all over yourself and the negativity it elicits in you. No need to beat yourself up for continuing to should, just notice it with a, “Well, there’s that,” and move along. Just the act of noticing diffuses it and gives it permission to go on its way.
If it feels better to you, experiment with replacing should with could. Could gives us options and the freedom to choose. Remember, we like freedom. We like choice. Choose wisely.
